Gippsland has a colourful radio history, beginning with 3TR*, 3GI, then 3UL.

Since the 1930s, the stations have changed greatly in sound and technology, which we briefly covered in the story Gippsland’s 90 years of radio.

Four of the 1240 Music Men at 3TR in 1967 were George “Groover” Wayne, Sam Galea, Keith Wells and Laurie Miller (later Joe Miller), all of whom went on to successful careers at capital city stations. They are joined in the audio clip below by 3TR sports announcer Kevin Dagg for Jukebox Jury in which they played and discussed some new record releases.

We know now that the 1240 Music Men nailed it by saying ‘yes’ to Green Tambourine by The Lemon Pipers. However sports guy Kevin said ‘no’. He then went on to say ‘yes’ to PP Arnold’s (If You Think You’re) Groovy, again off the mark. Apparently Kevin was better at picking winners on the track, than on the turntable.

*3TR is now called Gippsland’s Gold (aka Gold 1242), still on the 3TR frequency that was adjusted from 1240 to 1242 in 1978. 3TR’s owners ACE Radio started an FM station in 2002, which now carries the station name as TR-FM.
