Talk about racing: Justin Darcy

Justin Darcy getting some media tips from Sky racing commentator and RSN race caller James de Maat

On the morning of a Gippsland race meeting, or on the Friday before a weekend meeting, Justin Darcy presents a preview on the radio.

Those reports and a bit of racing chatter on YouTube constitute the early steps toward a full blown career for Justin in racing media.

You’ll hear Justin’s previews in the sports section of local news bulletins on Gippsland’s Gold 98.3 FM & 1242 AM and on TRFM.

So who is Justin, and what interest does he have in racing?

In his own words, in part…

I have been a lucky enough to grow up in a legendary decade, not only Australian racing, but racing all around the world, as the likes of champions Black Caviar, Frankel and now Winx have dominated rivals.

But for me, seeing not only my horse, but those celebrated champions grace the turf is something that I cannot compare any experience to. Seeing good horses win is one thing, but, taking in the atmosphere of a big crowd at carnival time and of course the race call, boosts the adrenaline to another level.

I have also been brought up with my parents owning horses and now I’m fortunate enough to have my own share in a gelding trained by Matthew Brown.

That’s from an article Justin wrote for Turftopia. Click HERE to read the full piece.

Justin is 18 years old and a member of a racing family. Currently doing Year 12 VCE studies at Lavalla Catholic College, Traralgon, he has added duties as a school captain. But he is not too busy to visit the tracks, to record radio stories and previews, and do written versions for the Gippsland’s Gold and TRFM web sites.

A media career in racing awaits Justin.
